Due to the highly contagious panleukopenia virus at the animal shelter, we are currently unable to accept any cats. This admission freeze is in effect immediately and will last until at least the beginning of September. This also means that not all cat areas are accessible to visitors to the shelter. We ask for your understanding.
What is panleukopenia?
Panleukopenia (feline distemper) is a highly contagious, often fatal viral disease in cats caused by the feline parvovirus (FPV). It is not transmissible to humans or dogs.
Symptoms
The disease often begins suddenly with a high fever, lethargy, severe vomiting, and watery or bloody diarrhea. The animals become extremely dehydrated very quickly and suffer from a massive drop in white blood cells (leukopenia), which leaves them defenseless against other pathogens.
Treatment
Since there is no specific medication against the virus, the cat must receive immediate intensive care from a veterinarian.
- Fluid and electrolyte therapy: (infusions to counteract dehydration)
- Supportive medications: (e.g., antiemetics and antibiotics to prevent secondary infections)
Prognosis
Without treatment, many animals die, especially kittens; with prompt intensive care, most cats survive and are then usually immune for life.
