Through neutering campaigns for stray cats, we reduce animal suffering in Tenerife in a sustainable way. Arche Noah Teneriffa catches stray cats from existing colonies, has them neutered and given medical care, and then returns stable animals to their familiar colony.
Neutering stray cats is one of the most effective measures against uncontrolled reproduction, illness and hunger. Every neutered cat prevents further animal suffering and helps stabilise the size of cat colonies in the long term. This work is especially important in Tenerife because many stray cats are ill, poorly cared for or left to survive without human help.
The organisational effort is considerable. For every campaign, we need to find volunteers, plan vehicles, coordinate veterinary appointments, prepare trapping operations and often also allow for evening or night work. As many cats only leave their hiding places during the cooler evening and night hours, these operations are physically demanding and take a great deal of time.
This project is also very difficult to manage financially without additional support. An average colony of around 10 to 15 female and male cats costs approximately €1,000 for neutering alone. Additional costs for fuel, deworming treatments, flea treatments, medical care or food are not included. Donations specifically made for this project currently cover only around 10 per cent of the actual costs on average.
A stray cat sponsorship helps us continue this vital work. Monthly donations finance neutering, medical care, food, transport costs and necessary treatments. Every contribution helps reduce the suffering of stray cats in Tenerife in a practical and sustainable way.
During the hot summer months, many operations are paused because trapping is only possible late in the evening. From autumn, or around November/December, we aim to continue the project – with the goal of neutering even more cat colonies in Tenerife and stabilising them in the long term.
